Learn Shibari Suspension

Learn how to fly . . . our Suspension series

Our Suspension Series guides you step by step through three coordinated workshops

from your first partial load to a full suspension from a single point and from bamboo.

As soon as the body begins to lift off the ground, weight, movement, and space all change.

The rope becomes a supporting element, and the interplay between rigger and model creates a very special kind of connection.

This new dimension opens up possibilities that simply aren't available on the ground.

Three Workshops—A Thoughtful Learning Journey

Suspension isn’t something you can learn in a hurry.

Once a body is lifted off the ground, the demands on both roles change

and even small adjustments can make a big difference.

That’s why our three workshops build on one another.

Each workshop lasts five hours, builds on what you’ve learned and lays the foundation for the next step.

🧭 Your Path to Suspension

Each of the three workshops in our Suspension Series has its own focus and expands your possibilities in the air.

1️⃣ Introduction to Suspension | Semi-Suspension

An introduction to suspension. You’ll learn the fundamentals of safely loading the rope with weight and gain your first experience with partial suspension.

Full description - Intro

2️⃣ Into the Air | Full Suspension · Single Point

The floor falls away... we explore Full Suspension from a single suspension point and the new demands it places on movement, balance, and working in open space.

Full description - Air

3️⃣ Into the Bamboo | Full Suspension · Multiple Point

With bamboo, suspension opens up a wider area and several possible attachment points. We’ll cover new ways to secure the bamboo, distribute weight, and explore the possibilities created by the expanded space.

Full description - Bamboo

The time in between is part of it . . .

There is a deliberate four-week interval between the workshops.

This gives you time not only to implement what you have learned in the workshop, but also to gain your own experience with it.

but ...

Not everyone has the opportunity to practice suspension at home, and you don't have to.

With our Kumite training, dem ZENDO Bondage Meeting and other offers, we have various options available.

to continue working with rope between workshops, to gain experience and to deepen what has been learned.

It's not just about practicing: Our support helps you to identify uncertainties early on,

Questioning movement patterns and correcting things together before unfavorable habits become ingrained.

You can bring exactly these experiences to the next workshop.

Thus, the Suspension Series not only evolves from event to event, but you also evolve along with it.

You decide how you want to experience the Suspension Series:

  • As individual workshops

You can book each workshop individually and thus select exactly the area that interests you.

  • As a coherent series

Do you want to experience the development step by step and still have time to practice between workshops?

Book the entire Suspension Series and save 10% compared to individual booking.

This way you will accompany us over several weeks from the first experiences with semi suspension to full suspension on bamboo.

Intro to Suspension | Module 1

When the ground feels lighter — your introduction to our Suspension Series

Semi Suspension · Fundamentals · Body Movement

Curious what happens when the rope starts to actually bear weight?

With Intro to Suspension, we’ll take our first steps into the world of suspension. We’ll explore how a tie changes once the rope begins to support some of the body’s weight, and develop an initial understanding of the specific demands this creates.

We’ll look not only at rigging, but at the body itself. Shifting weight, center of gravity, and movement all become important parts of suspension, showing us how closely the body’s position is connected to the entire system.

This workshop gives you time to get your first experience with Semi Suspension, understand how things connect, and develop a feel for what suspension feels like and how it changes.

🧩WHAT TO EXPECT:

We’ll start with the equipment and basic safety options. Then we’ll put these fundamentals into practice and work together towards the first partial-load suspensions. We’ll introduce the basics, explain how everything fits together, and then give you plenty of time to try out what you’ve learned. We’ll support you throughout, answer your questions and give you individual feedback.

📣WHO IT’S FOR:

Intro to Suspension is for anyone with no prior suspension experience who’s looking for a solid introduction.

The workshop is also suitable for experienced riggers who want to refresh their foundations, review their technique or look at their usual approach from a new perspective.

Into the Air | Module II

With Into the Air, we leave the ground behind completely.

Full Suspension · Single Point

What changes when the body is suspended freely in space?

With Into the Air we focus on Full Suspension at a Single Point. Building on the experience from Intro to Suspension, we explore the specific demands and possibilities that arise when the body is completely off the ground.

In Semi Suspension, the ground is still part of the system. It provides orientation, allows for adjustments, and can support some of the body weight.Once fully off the ground, the situation changes fundamentally. The body is free in space, and every movement directly affects the suspension.

The center of gravity therefore becomes a key part of our practice. Even small changes in body position can affect balance, tension, and alignment. At the same time, free movement opens up new possibilities for positioning and composition.

This change affects both roles. The rope bottom becomes an active part of the suspension. Body awareness and communication become more important when it comes to noticing changes early and responding to them together.

Being fully off the ground also changes the risk profile. Situations may develop differently than expected and require continuous assessment. We therefore focus on noticing changes, adapting decisions, and remaining able to act throughout a suspension.

🧩WHAT TO EXPECT:

We’ll start by applying the experience gained in Semi Suspension to the Single Point, and use that as a foundation to build your first complete suspensions. We’ll guide you through each setup and give you time to experience the new demands in practice. As the workshop progresses, we’ll work with different positions and movements and observe how they affect the suspension in progress.

Situations that develop differently than planned are part of practice, too. Using real-life examples, we’ll work through troubleshooting, assessing a situation together, and possible decisions during a suspension.

📣WHO IT’S FOR:

Into the Air is for riggers and rope bottoms who want to make the transition to full suspension and already have experience with the fundamentals of suspension. Experienced riggers and rope bottoms are also welcome if they’d like to reflect on their existing practice, refresh their fundamentals or take away new ideas for their work.

Into the Bamboo | Module III

Bamboo is more than just another suspension point.

Full Suspension · Multiple Point

Suspension takes on a new dimension

With Into the Bamboo we expand Full Suspension into a new spatial dimension. Unlike a single suspension point, bamboo offers several ways to position the body in space and guide it through different points.

This changes not only the body’s position, but the entire suspension system. Multiple suspension points bring together different directions of pull and forces. Their arrangement affects how loads are distributed, how the body is guided, and what movements become possible within the suspension.

This interplay is at the heart of the workshop. We treat bamboo not simply as another piece of equipment, but as a system in its own right, with its own particular demands and possibilities.

This also includes the setup itself. Securing the bamboo and selecting and arranging the suspension points are essential parts of the planning. What is relatively straightforward with a Single Point must be carefully coordinated in a Multiple Point Suspension.

The experience is different for the rope bottom, too. Multiple directions of pull and points of contact create different physical sensations and open up new ways to guide and shape the body in space.

With Into the Bamboo, we conclude the Suspension Series. Building on the first experiences with partial suspension and Full Suspension at a Single Point, the final workshop introduces the more spatially complex practice of working with multiple suspension points.

🧩WHAT TO EXPECT:

We begin with the bamboo and its specialized rigging, then apply what we’ve learned from Single Point Suspension to the new system. Together, we’ll work through different setups and explore how the choice and arrangement of suspension points affect the resulting suspension.

Afterwards, you’ll have time to try out different possibilities and experiment with the spatial setup. We’ll guide you through planning, rigging and execution, helping you recognize how the different parts of the system work together.

Assessing and adjusting a Multiple Point Suspension is also part of the practical work. We’ll make time for questions, observation and troubleshooting, and explore together how changes during a suspension affect the system as a whole.

📣WHO IT’S FOR:

Into the Bamboo is for riggers and rope bottoms who already have experience with Full Suspension from a Single Point and want to expand their suspension practice to include multiple suspension points.

Experienced riggers and rope bottoms are also welcome if they want to reflect on their existing practice or find fresh inspiration for working with Multiple Point Suspension.

🌸 HOW WE TEACH SUSPENSION:

Suspension can’t be reduced to a set of individual techniques.

That’s why we teach not only how a tie works, but why it works—and what changes when weight, movement and different directions of pull come into play.

We make time for questions, practice and solutions tailored to each person. Our small groups allow us to give you individual support and adapt to different levels of experience and needs.

Learning shouldn’t happen under pressure. You don’t have to prove anything here, and nobody has to “push through.” We want to create a space where you can experiment, ask questions and talk about any concerns.

In suspension, experience and safety don’t come from quickly copying spectacular positions, but from understanding, practice and engaging mindfully with your own body and the shared system.

FAQ: SUSPENSION | Learn how to fly

  • Who is the Suspension Series for?

This series is for riggers and rope bottoms who are already confident working with rope and want to expand their practice to include suspension. Intro to Suspension is the starting point in our Suspension Series. Participants should have basic Shibari skills and know a suspension-capable upper-body tie, such as a TK/Gote using two ropes.

  • Do I need prior suspension experience?

You don’t need any prior suspension experience for Intro to Suspension. However, you should be confident handling rope and have a suspension-ready upper-body harness, such as a two-rope TK/Gote.

Into the Air and Into the Bamboo build on the experience gained in the previous modules. Participation in the preceding module, or comparable experience, is therefore a prerequisite.

  • Is the Suspension Series suitable for experienced riggers too?

    Yes.

The workshops are not exclusively for beginners in suspension. Experienced riggers are also welcome to refresh their knowledge, reflect on their practice, or gain new perspectives on rigging, movement, risk assessment and working with the rope bottom.

  • Do I need to attend with a regular partner?

👉 Both roles are part of the learning process and will be developed together during the workshop. Since suspension is a two-person activity, you’ll work with the same partner and stay in your assigned roles throughout the workshop.

  • Do I need to be proficient in both roles?

    No.

To take part, you choose one dedicated role: rigger or rope bottom. You don’t need to be proficient in both roles. At the same time, it’s important to us that both sides understand what happens during a suspension and the responsibilities that come with each role.

  • What should my model/rope bottom be able to do?

The rope bottom doesn’t need prior suspension experience, but should be able to communicate their physical sensations and any changes they notice. We see the rope bottom not as a passive part of the suspension, but as an active participant in the process we share.

  • Can I book the workshops individually?

    Yes.

The three modules can be booked individually or together as a Suspension Series. As the workshops build on one another, Into the Air and Into the Bamboo require the relevant prior experience.

  • Why are there four weeks between the workshops?

Time between modules is deliberately built into the schedule.

Shibari in general, and suspension in particular, require hands-on experience and can’t be learned just by watching a demonstration and copying it once.

The four weeks give you time to practise what you’ve learned, gain experience and bring new questions to the next module. You can also make use of our KUMITE training sessions and ZENDO rope meetups.

  • Why don’t you offer an intensive course, for example over an entire weekend?

We believe that sustainable learning takes time.

Between modules, you’ll have time to practise, come up with questions, and consolidate what you’ve learned. Each module builds on the one before it, helping you develop a solid foundation step by step.

  • What happens if I miss a module?

If you book the Suspension Series as a complete series, the three workshops build on each other.

If you can’t attend a session, you’ll need to make up that module before you can take part in the next one.

With suspension in particular, it’s important to us that you have the necessary foundations and safety knowledge before taking the next step.

You can make up the missed module in a one-to-one private lesson at a separately agreed time. An additional fee applies. If several participants want to make up the same module around the same time, we can arrange a group session.

The fee for the module originally booked remains payable regardless of attendance. Any make-up session will be charged separately.

If you don’t make up a module, you won’t be able to continue participating in the current Suspension Series.

If you book the workshops separately, the requirements for each individual module will of course apply.

  • How large is the group?

⚖️ We want to give you individual support and ensure your safety, so we deliberately limit the number of participants. With a maximum of four couples in Semi-Suspension and three couples from Module 2 onwards, there’s plenty of time for personal feedback, questions and practice.

For us, quality matters more than group size.

  • How safe is suspension?

🪢 Suspension is an advanced form of Shibari and cannot be practised without risk. That’s why safety is a core part of our training. We cover the specific risks of suspension, relevant anatomy, possible contraindications, load and shear forces, and how to assess situations during a suspension.

  • How physically demanding is the Suspension Series?

🌿 Suspension can be physically demanding for both the rigger and the rope bottom, though in different ways.

For the rope bottom, partial or full bodyweight suspension places different physical demands on the body than ground-based bondage.

The rigger also does physical work and must, among other things, control the rope bottom’s weight and position.

That’s why we make sure to build up the load gradually and adapt it to each person’s needs.

It’s not about suspending for as long or as much as possible, but about safely learning the technique and understanding your own physical limits.

In Intro to Suspension, we start with semi-suspension so you can first get used to the changed load and the feeling of being in the rope.

However, some positions may require strength, flexibility, and core stability from both the person tying and the person being tied.

    Important:

    🧘honest self-assessment

    🧘Communicating boundaries in good time

    🧘 Willingness to slow down

Nobody has to “push through.” Your safety and bodily integrity always come before ambition or aesthetics.

  • I’m not sure I’d feel comfortable being suspended—can I still take part?

🧩Yes. Intro to Suspension is designed to gradually introduce you to the experience of partial suspension at a low height. Nobody has to do a full suspension at the outset. You can build your experience at your own pace and explore together with us how to handle this new experience.

  • What equipment do I need?

You’ll need to bring your own suitable rope kit.

We’ll provide the rest of the equipment so you can try out all the different setups before you decide.

  • Venue

Classes take place at our own studio.
