Rope Taster | Introductory Workshop

.

Perhaps you’ve seen pictures of Shibari.

Perhaps you’ve heard stories about it or just stumbled across it.

Maybe you’re simply curious.

"What fascinates people about this art, and how does it affect them?"

Or:

"Is this even for us?"

These questions aren’t an obstacle. They’re the beginning!

That’s exactly why we created our Rope Taster workshop.

Because not every rope journey begins with a multi-part course.

Sometimes it begins with a workshop full of curiosity, new impressions, and a willingness to discover something unfamiliar together.

FIRST STEPS INTO SHIBARI 初 歩 的

.

Sometimes a shared journey doesn’t begin with a knot, but with the courage to open up to one another.

.

Shibari is often described in terms of rope, knots and intricate ties.

For us, though, Shibari begins much earlier.

It begins when two people consciously make time for each other, when attention is given and trust grows.

When communication becomes more important than words.

And when a simple rope becomes something that’s hard to explain but needs to be experienced.

.
Many people come to us with images in their minds, expecting elaborate knots. And yes, that’s part of Shibari.

But we believe Shibari begins much earlier.

Not with the first knot, but with consciously noticing another person.

.

Every rope journey begins with a first encounter!

.

A rope isn’t the main focus; it’s a tool that can make connection possible.

That’s exactly the first impression we want to give you at our Rope Taster session.

Of course, you’ll learn some basic techniques. You’ll handle the rope and get your first hands-on experience

and create a simple tie together.

But it’s just as important to us that you understand why we see Shibari as more than a technique.

Because, for us, a tie doesn’t begin only when the rope touches the body.

It begins when attention, awareness and trust come together, creating communication where words aren’t needed.

💫 WHAT HAPPENS IN THIS WORKSHOP?

Together, we’ll take our first steps into the world of Shibari. You’ll get to know the rope, gain your first hands-on experience, and discover why safety, communication, and consent are essential to sharing rope together.

Of course, you’ll also learn your first simple ties. But for us, that’s not the real goal.

They’re the beginning of an experience.

We want to do more than show you how things work. We want to give you a sense of why Shibari captivates and inspires so many people for years to come.

💫
FOR US, SAFETY STARTS BEFORE THE FIRST KNOT

Because using rope means deliberately restricting another person’s freedom of movement, responsibility and being well-informed are part of the process from the start.

That’s why we cover not only rope materials, basic safety, and mindful rope handling, but also communication, boundaries, and consent.

Not as a box-ticking exercise, but because we believe trust can only grow when people understand what they’re agreeing to.

Because: Consent doesn’t start with a “yes”; it starts with being informed.

💫  WHAT YOU’LL TAKE HOME:

Perhaps your first simple tie.

Perhaps a new perspective on your partner.

Perhaps the discovery that rope can bring a surprising sense of calm, closeness, or trust.

Or perhaps simply the thought:

"Ifinally understand why you love Shibari so much." If you leave the workshop feeling this way, we’ve achieved our goal

📣 WHO IS THIS WORKSHOP FOR?

For anyone who’d like to discover Shibari in a relaxed setting.

For couples who’d like to try something new together.

For people who feel nervous about touch, as well as BDSM enthusiasts who want to incorporate rope into their play consciously and safely.

Or simply for anyone who’s curious and wants to find out whether Shibari is right for them.

🧩 AND IF YOU’D LIKE TO EXPLORE FURTHER . . .

Our Rope Taster isn’t about leaving with the feeling that you can do everything now.

Instead, it’s meant to give you an honest insight into our teaching approach and spark the first step in a rope journey you might take together.

If you’d like to dive deeper into the world of Shibari afterwards, our Basic Course | Fundamentals of Shibari will guide you step by step.

Because we believe:

A strong foundation takes you further than the next knot.

FAQ: Rope Taster | FIRST STEPS INTO SHIBARI

  • Why should I attend a Rope Taster?

    👉 In short:

Seilschnuppern is your welcoming introduction to the world of rope and to our approach to teaching and guiding.

🌱 A gentle introduction, no pressure — our Rope Taster is a one-off introductory workshop and the ideal way to get to know Shibari if you’re curious, with no prior experience, no pressure and no long-term commitment. You’ll have a safe, guided space to find out whether rope is right for you.

🏠 Experience the space—it’s part of the experience.

At our rope taster session, you’ll get a feel for:

    ✔  Atmosphere and setting

    ✔ Group size and dynamics

✔ How we treat one another

    ✔ Safety and Structure

That’s precisely why many participants choose to take more courses: they feel safe and welcome here.

  • Is this a technique workshop or more of an experience?

    Both—with a clear focus.

Of course, you’ll learn some first techniques and gain hands-on experience with rope. At the same time, we want to show you why Shibari means much more to us than simply learning individual ties.

Our goal isn’t to show you as many knots as possible, but to give you a first impression of what Shibari can create between two people.

At our rope taster session, you’ll get:

✅ Introduction to different types of rope and their effects

    ✅ Essential rope safety basics

✅ Learn simple knots and basic tying techniques

    ✅ Guided practice

✅ Tips for aesthetic and safe rope placement

✅ Inspiration for communication, intimacy and connection through rope

By the end of the workshop, you’ll have learned a simple tie that you can also use in your own practice.

  • What’s the difference between the Rope Taster, Kickstart and Basic Course?

🪢 Rope Taster Session – An introduction for couples

Ideal if you'd like to get started as a couple (including rope partners or friends) and share your first experiences together.

🚀 Kickstart – a great entry point for individuals, with flexible team formation

Kickstart deliberately opens the door to individuals who want to enter the world of rope—even without a regular partner.

    👉 Basic course:

The Basic Course isn’t a taster session, but a structured and in-depth learning journey.

✔️ Multiple sessions that build on each other

    ✔️ Structured skills development

✔️ More time for review, integration and questions

✔️ Sustainable development of technique & safety

  • Who is the Rope Taster for?

    This workshop is for:

👉 Beginners with no prior experience who want to discover Shibari

👉 Couples or teams looking to gain their first experience together

👉 BDSM practitioners interested in incorporating rope into their play.

👉 Curious people who’d simply like to try something different.

This workshop is designed for pairs—regardless of gender, orientation, or body type!

Our spaces welcome queer identities, diverse relationship styles and neurodivergent people. Respect and consent are essential.

The Rope Taster is also a great way to meet us as teachers and artists and get to know our space. You can experience how we teach, the atmosphere we create and how our space is set up for practice, sharing and creative exploration.

  • Do we need any prior experience?

🪢 No—no previous experience is needed for the Try Rope workshop.

This workshop is specifically designed for people with no prior experience. You don’t need any rope experience or specialist knowledge. We’ll guide you step by step and explain everything you need for a safe, relaxed introduction.

  • Do I need to bring my own ropes?

    🪢 NO

Ropes in different materials are available at the venue free of charge. This gives you a chance to get to know different materials and take your time trying out which ropes feel right for you.

You’re welcome to bring your own ropes, too.

  • What should I bring?

    👉 Openness and curiosity

    👉 Comfortable clothing

👉 Blanket (thick socks if needed / shoe-free zone)

    👉 Your questions! 🌟

All other materials are available to use on-site or will be provided. (Drinks and snacks included)

  • What should I wear?

Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely.

Many participants opt for leggings, sportswear, or a close-fitting top. The important thing is that you feel comfortable and can move freely.

We recommend that the feminine-presenting bottom avoid wearing an underwire bra.

  • Can I attend on my own?

This course is for established rope partners—whether you’re a couple, friends, or play partners.

The key thing is that, as an individual participant, you have a practice partner throughout the course who is attending with you and available to practise.

If you don’t currently have a regular partner, feel free to get in touch. We’ll figure out the options together and whether private lessons or another offering might suit you better.

  • How large is the group?

⚖️ We keep the number of participants intentionally limited. With a maximum of six pairs, there’s plenty of time for individual feedback, questions and practice.

This allows us to offer individual guidance, give feedback and answer questions, supporting you where you need it most. For us, quality matters more than group size.

We’d love to support you on an individual basis.

  • Course content

Along with your first simple tie, you'll take home a better understanding of why Shibari fascinates so many people.

You may come away with new ideas for your communication.

    Maybe more trust.

Or simply enjoy a special afternoon together.

And perhaps the wish to continue your rope journey.

  • Do I need to be especially flexible or fit?

    🌿 No.

The exercises are designed so that no special flexibility or physical fitness is required.

We adapt the content to suit participants’ abilities and make sure everyone feels comfortable.

  • How can we tell if Shibari is right for us?

    There is no one-size-fits-all answer.

Some people are captivated after just a few minutes. Others only realize during the workshop that they’re experiencing each other or communicating in a new way.

Our Rope Taster is designed to give you exactly this kind of space, without expectations or pressure to perform. In the end, you don’t have to fit our idea of Shibari. What matters more is that you discover whether our way of practising Shibari feels right for you.

  • What if we love Shibari and want to keep going?

    We’d be delighted, of course.

🚀 The next step is our modular Basic Course: over four scheduled sessions, you’ll learn technique, safety and structure step by step, building a solid foundation that lasts.

It’s not just about trying it out, but about learning systematically, practicing mindfulness, and developing over time.

Alternatively, you can book a private lesson to practice one-on-one at your own pace and work towards your specific goals.

  • Awareness – Why do you talk so much about consent and communication?

Because for us, a great time with rope starts long before the first knot.

Because rope intentionally affects another person’s freedom of movement, being informed, communicating clearly and giving mutual consent are essential. We want both people to understand what they’re agreeing to and to shape their time with the rope mindfully.

Are there any rules of conduct?

Yes. Respect, consent, mindfulness and treating one another with appreciation are essential.

We place great importance on the safety and wellbeing of all participants at our courses and events. We therefore expect you to act carefully, communicate openly, respect consent and be mindful of others. We encourage everyone to honour their own boundaries and take responsibility for themselves.

Together, we want to create a space where everyone feels safe and comfortable. We’re LGBTQIA+🌈-friendly, neurodivergence- and neurodiversity-friendly, and inclusive in general.

Harassment and other violations will not be tolerated, and we reserve the right to remove anyone from the premises.

By entering the event, you expressly agree to the house rules, code of conduct/netiquette, and the legal notices contained therein, and undertake to comply with them.

    Guidelines

Remember, we all want to have a good time together and look out for one another. Disruptive behavior or failure to follow the rules will result in immediate and permanent removal!

  • Rope Taster Pricing

    Regular ticket:  €85

    Supporter ticket: €110

    Community ticket: €60

    - all prices incl. VAT -

What do the different prices mean?!

We see our events as an opportunity to engage responsibly with (risk-involved) kinky play, rather than relying on the often incomplete or misleading material found on the World Wide Web. We therefore strive to balance accessible prices with fair compensation for everyone involved (instructors, etc.). That’s why we’ve chosen a pricing model designed to make high-quality knowledge accessible to as many people as possible:

The REGULAR ticket price covers our costs.

With our COMMUNITY ticket, we want to give people on low(er) incomes the opportunity to attend our events.

We warmly invite those who can afford it to support others by choosing a SUPPORTER ticket at a higher price. This helps us make our offerings accessible to people with very limited financial means.

For every Supporter Ticket sold, a Community Ticket will be made available. We’d like to thank you in advance for your solidarity.

(The first Community Ticket is funded by SakuraRope.)

We trust our thoughtful community, so please choose your ticket price based on your own assessment.

*I can’t afford the ticket, but I’d still like to take part. What can I do?

    >> Feel free to email us at mail@sakura-rope.de. We’ll see what we can do. There are usually options, such as paying in smaller instalments.
