Arrive · Experience · Explore | Every rope journey begins with a first encounter.

The perfect introduction for anyone who wants to discover and experience Shibari, and find out what makes this special art so fascinating to so many people.

.

What if Shibari didn’t start with a rope at all?

Many people come for the rope. Most stay for what unfolds between two people.

For us, Shibari doesn’t begin with a knot. It begins when attention matters more than everyday life, when communication can be more than words, and when a simple rope becomes a space for trust, closeness and shared experience.

We’re not here to show you as many techniques as possible or to “teach you Shibari” in just a few hours. Instead, we want to give you the chance to discover this special way of connecting and get an authentic first impression of why Shibari has been part of our lives and inspired us for so many years.

Because we believe:

Sometimes a shared journey begins not with a knot, but with the courage to open up to one another.

In a relaxed atmosphere, we’ll guide you through your first steps with rope in our three-hour Rope Taster. Together, you’ll discover the basics of safe, mindful rope practice, gain some hands-on experience and see how a simple rope can create attention, trust and connection.

Our aim isn’t to cover as much material as possible. What matters more to us is that you understand why Shibari can be so much more than decorative rope patterns, and why connection always comes before technique for us.

Whether you’d like to continue your rope journey in our Basic Course | Fundamentals of Shibari or simply enjoy a special afternoon together, either way is just right.

Basic Course | Fundamentals of Shibari

A four-part fundamentals course for a safe and mindful introduction to the world of Shibari.

Next course starts: January 2027

Or join our waiting list or newsletter—no obligation.

[Also available as individual one-to-one lessons]

For many, the first step into Shibari starts with an image, a video or a desire to discover something new together.

But after just a few tries, it becomes clear that Shibari is much more than learning individual knots. Every technique is underpinned by principles and connections that shape how a tie feels, how safe it is and how rope can become a shared experience. That’s exactly where our Basic Course comes in.

.

Across four progressive modules, we’ll guide you step by step into the world of Japanese rope bondage. You’ll learn the fundamental techniques, develop safe rope handling skills and discover how small changes can make a big difference to tying safely and comfortably. Because we believe:

A strong foundation takes you further than the next knot.

.

Our Basic Course is for anyone who wants to do more than simply copy Shibari. We teach the technical and practical foundations of Japanese rope bondage, complemented by anatomy, equipment knowledge, safety and mindful rope handling. We’re interested not only in how, but above all in why behind every technique.

Because, lasting learning begins with understanding.

For us, Shibari is about more than technique. Together, we’ll explore communication, trust and the interpersonal dynamics of rope bondage. Step by step, you’ll develop a feel for how technique can create attentiveness, connection and a shared experience.

We give equal attention to both roles. Riggers learn to handle rope preventively and responsibly, while models (Ukete) learn to better understand their bodies, build their own risk profile and find out how they can actively shape a tie. Because safety is something we create together!

.

We deliberately teach in small groups of no more than four pairs. This leaves time for personal feedback, individual guidance and practice. Our goal isn’t to show you as many ties as possible, but to give you a solid foundation for continuing your rope journey safely, mindfully and with joy. We hope that through Shibari you’ll discover not only new techniques, but perhaps also a new way of connecting, paying attention and communicating with one another.

“Walking gets boring when you learn how to fly... “

When the ground falls away, it’s not just the technical demands that change. Forces, loads, movement and communication within the rope figure (kata) also become more complex. From semi-suspension through full suspension on a single point to multiple-point suspension on bamboo you’ll learn to safely load the rope with weight and understand the body in the air.

In our three-part Suspension Series, we teach you how these elements work together, step by step. We cover the specific safety considerations and risks of suspension, explore relevant anatomy in depth, and look at possible contraindications as well as the different shear and load forces acting on the body in the air.

We see suspension as a collaboration between the rigger and the model / rope bottom. Body awareness, communication and assessing situations together are just as important as the technical setup.

Each of the three workshops lasts five hours and takes place about four weeks apart. You can book the modules individually or as a complete series.

Each module lasts five hours and can be booked individually or as a complete series.

Would you like to find out whether suspension is for you first?

➡️Then you can start with Intro to Suspension.

Would you like to take the whole journey with us, from semi-suspension to bamboo?

➡️Then you can book the complete Suspension Series as a course.

If you choose the Suspension Series, the workshops are always about four weeks apart. This gives you time to practise what you’ve learned, gain experience and bring questions from your own practice to the next module. Our KUMITE training sessions and ZENDO Rope Meetups are ideal opportunities to practise and build on your skills using our existing suspension points.

Specials: IYASU ROPU ©

Ajourney beyond technique—where rope, breath and energy resonate. Iyasu Ropu combines Shibari / Kinbaku with holistic energy work, making subtle currents tangible and perceptible through the rope.

This sensitive, profound practice is primarily offered in a safe 1:1 setting.

.
We are the first official instructors in the holistic fusion of Shibari/Kinbaku and energy work using Sarca Martello’s method. The Iyasu-Ropu method takes an expanded approach to Semenawa and is Sarca’s own creation, born from combining his rope studies with holistic disciplines and the study of nonverbal communication.

In Shibari, we often come across the terms "emotions" and "communication" ... with this method, we go a step further, creating a unique fusion of the aesthetic art of Shibari and the powerful world of energy work. It gathers the subtle energies in our bodies and channels them through the ropes to create an even more intense and moving Shibari experience. This workshop is about more than Shibari technique; it also explores the emotional and spiritual dimensions of this art form. We’ll explore the importance of communication, trust and respect, and how these elements can shape the intensity and depth of the experience. .

We use restrictive ties to challenge both body and mind, and to read and draw out the resulting emotions and reactions of the person being tied. We hold space for them with care, helping them become aware of these feelings and begin a process of resolution. We want to open doors—the hidden doors behind which we conceal our fears and pain—and create a whole new level of connection, emotion and closeness.

.

This method can evoke very intimate and sometimes hidden feelings, so we place great importance on a respectful, safe environment and on respecting personal boundaries. It can be a physically and emotionally intense experience, which is why we primarily teach this method in a 1:1 setting (excluding the “Iyasu Ropu” introductory workshop).

What our students say about us:

"We went home with so much more.

I already had some experience, and I was pleasantly surprised by how much depth there is even in seemingly “simple” techniques. You teach not only the how, but also the why.
What I found especially valuable was your approach: responsibility over ego. That sets you clearly apart from other offerings, and it’s why I’m happy to travel hundreds of kilometres regularly."

"I came to Kickstart on my own, and honestly, I was pretty nervous.

As a queer person, I’m very mindful of the spaces I enter.

I felt welcome from the very beginning. It was lovely to simply be there as a person. And I learned a lot along the way. You both explain things incredibly clearly, prioritize safety, and create a space where you don’t feel judged."

"I was incredibly happy that the Sakuras were able to teach Sarca’s techniques. The course itself was structured in mini-modules that followed a clear thread. Seeing and feeling what’s possible when you give this kind of rope a try is amazing. It’s only gradually becoming clear just how much closeness it created between my model and me. It really is a completely different way of tying!
Thank you so much for letting me experience this before the end of the year."

"Seilschnuppern was a wonderful event yesterday and broadened our horizons. The atmosphere was harmonious, welcoming and intimate, with lots of useful information and background. The practical part was especially great, with demonstrations, practice, supervision and ideas. We’d love to join again next time 🤗. Thanks for making us feel included."

"Great course, really well designed, and you can tell there’s a lot of passion behind it.

Relaxed atmosphere and a lovely practice space. The tips and feedback are excellent, and there’s no time pressure. Questions are always answered expertly. I felt comfortable throughout and will definitely be back. I highly recommend this course to beginners."

"A huge thank you for letting your passion in your workshops grow my curiosity into genuine excitement. I wanted to understand Shibari hands-on. Above all, I wanted to know technically what actually happens to the person being tied. At first, I thought about it in purely rational terms... or so I thought... Ha! I never expected to enjoy tying so much."
